Finding a Job
So you
are all set to relocate to York County and start your new
job but what about your spouse? Don't worry, he or she has
plenty of options because the job market in York County is
diverse and growing, with employers ranging from small businesses
to multi-national corporations. Harley-Davidson Motor Co.,
The Pfaltzgraff Co., and Starbucks Coffee operate major facilities
here, as do many other well-known companies.
York
County's Labor Market
According to economic reports, York County has been one of
the fastest growing counties in Pennsylvania. The area's resilient
job market is evidenced by its unemployment rates, 4.5 percent
for 2001, which is below the state's 4.7 percent rate for
the same time period. Available data show that the number
of businesses in the county and the number of people employed
has been steadily increasing for a period of five or more
years. Even as the red-hot economic growth of the late 1990s
has begun to cool, York County's unemployment rates remain
near or below state and national averages.
Finding
A Job
Whether you're looking for a job in manufacturing, services,
or technology-for entry-level or more experienced positions-
York's economy will almost certainly have something for you.
A number of free job finding services exist in the county
to help new workers get plugged-in to York County's economy.
There are also opportunities to learn new skills to help further
your career.
York
County's CareerLink office is a "one-stop shop"
for career services. This state-funded partnership consists
of more than 40 organizations and local businesses dedicated
to meeting the employment needs of the community. In order
to match qualified workers with available jobs, CareerLink
maintains a large database of job openings and networks with
companies that are regularly seeking new employees. In addition,
on-site career counselors take clients through three levels
of job searching: core, which utilizes the center's basic
services; intensive, providing job skills workshops and case
management; and job training, helping applicants expand their
qualifications.
York
County has several programs dedicated to creating and identifying
jobs and job skills in the manufacturing industries. The York
County Economic Development Corporation-whose mission is to
encourage job creation, job retention, and increase the economic
base of the county-has helped to create York's Advanced Skills
Center. The Center was established to work within the manufacturing
community to develop training programs and upgrade the workforce.
The Manufacturers Association of South Central Pennsylvania,
an advocate for the interests of the area's manufacturing
community, maintains a resume file of applicants who are actively
searching for employment.
