Lifestyle & Recreation
York
County is distinctive for its access to both urban and rural
cultural experiences. This balanced community offers the best
of both worlds-vibrant downtowns full of arts and entertainment
and scenic countryside perfect for recreation and leisure.
Town
York County supports cultural arts with a passion that some
might find surprising for a community of its size. Whether
you like Broadway shows, live music, or a dose of history,
there is no need to leave the county for great entertainment.
The county's
two performing arts centers, The Eichelberger in Hanover and
the Strand-Capitol in York, both offer a full slate of theatrical
and musical productions. The Strand-Capitol Performing Arts
Center has two theaters. The Strand Theater, with 1,200 seats,
is currently closed for renovations and will re-open in early
2003. In the meantime, major performances, such as York Symphony
concerts, continue at other venues throughout the county.
Hanover's Eichelberger Performing Arts Center has over 800
seats and is the second largest theater in the county. In
comparison, the Whitaker Center's Sunoco Theater in Harrisburg
seats only 664. The county also has several local performing
arts companies. York Symphony Orchestra has graced the community
with beautiful symphonic music for nearly 70 years. Each season,
this 80-instrument professional ensemble performs a number
of concerts, which range in theme from classical to swing
and everything in between. The York Little Theatre and the
Hanover Community Playhouse both feature local volunteers
performing professional-caliber plays.
…and Country
In stark contrast to the refinement of the downtowns, you'll
find that more laid-back lifestyles take precedence in the
country. Drive down its winding roads and you'll see an abundance
of working farms, complete with cows grazing on the hillsides
and tractors plowing the fields. Anyone can enjoy the fruits
of the working farms by visiting any one of the dozens of
farm markets that dot the county, where local farmers sell
fresh produce and homemade goodies. Every summer, Pennsylvania
Dutch Days in Hanover has hundreds of craft and food vendors,
an antique/classic car show, and all-day entertainment. The
county's biggest event is the Great York Fair, the oldest
continuously operated fair in the United States. Every September
the fairgrounds open to thousands of visitors and host a number
of well-known performers in the pop, rock, and country genres-not
to mention games, rides, and a full selection of Pennsylvania
Dutch cuisine.
