Schools & Education
No
matter where you choose to live in York County and regardless
of your child's age, you can be assured of quality care, education
and excellent preparation for life beyond the classroom. Department
of Education statistics show that York County exceeds education
levels for both the state and the nation based upon standardized
test scores. You'll find evidence of York County's commitment
to education upon searching the various alternatives including
childcare providers, after-school programs, the public school
system and a number of nonpublic and parochial schools.
Child
Care
If staying home with your young children is not a viable option,
York County has an abundance of child care choices to fit
your family's budget, needs and desires. There are state and
local resources you can use to obtain information on accreditation,
facilities, home-care programs, staff-to-child ratios, and
local providers. The Office of Children, Youth and Families
(OCYF), of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare,
has established the Child Care Works Network, which provides
valuable information about child care and early childhood
development.
After
School Programs
Just as child care is an important issue for many families,
activities for your children after school or during summer
break may also be a concern. Luckily, parents in York County
have a great support system provided by the YMCA of York &
York County. The Kid's Club program gives children the chance
to enjoy swimming, gymnastics, an after school snack and the
company of same-age children.
Schools
Last year, over 70,000 students were enrolled in public and
private schools in 16 school districts within York County.
Although each district is unique, the quality of public education
is consistent. Statistics consistently show each year that
the vast majority of students in York County exceed the state
averages for SAT and state achievement test scores. Additionally,
two-thirds of the county's seniors indicate that they plan
to attend college or some form of post-secondary education.
York County also has a number of non-public options for elementary
and secondary education, including a charter school in York,
several private preparatory schools, parochial schools, and
provisions for home schooling. Lincoln-Edison Charter School
Elementary, run by the country's largest for-profit school
management company, was established in 2000 as York County's
first charter school. Private and parochial schools have operated
in the county since settlers first came to the region. Current
offerings range from small, church-based facilities to larger
schools with a full range of academic and extra-curricular
offerings.
Post-Secondary
Education
After graduating from high school, your child won't need to
look far for quality and affordable continuing education.
York College of Pennsylvania, one of U.S. News & World
Report's "America's Best Colleges," borders the
southern end of York City and is home to over 3,700 full-time
students. Internationally renowned Penn State University also
maintains a thriving campus in the greater York area, serving
over 2,100 students. Technical offerings for continuing education
can be found at the Bradley Academy for the Visual Arts, Consolidated
School of Business, York Technical Institute, and the Yorktowne
Business Institute.
